Homemade Pizza Grilled or Baked

So when I was visiting friends last week, I convinced them to try a pizza experiment and make a pair of pizzas. One on the grill and another in the oven. I’ve made homemade pizza quite a few times but I typically bake it in the oven. However, with the summer in full force, using the oven means that the AC has to work harder. So I wanted to try making a pizza on the grill. I’d heard that this was not only possible but makes super crispy thin crust pizza. I decide to make my grilled pizza a white pizza, which means no tomato sauce. Instead I’d top it with fresh tomato slices, basil, garlic, and fresh mozzarella.

The second pizza was going to be a more traditional one with a tomato sauce base. It was topped with tasty Lupo’s sausage which we pregrilled and spicy wax peppers from my garden. Because of it using tomato sauce I was a little concerned about putting it on the grill and it sticking. So we baked this one off.

Pizza Dough recipe

1 cup tap water
2 tbs olive oil
3 cups flour
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp garlic salt
3 tsp yeast
1 tbs chopped garlic
1 tbs basil

Add these all to the bread machine in the order listed and set on “Pizza Dough”. If you don’t have a bread machine, mix water, sugar, olive oil, garlic salt, garlic, basil and yeast in a bowl. Add 1 cups of flour and mix. Add as much of remaining flour as possible by working in with hands. Round ball should form. Cover bowl with towel and let rise for 30 minutes. Divide into two pieces then knead and let rise for 30 more minutes. Dough should be ready to use.

Sausage and Pepper Pizza recipe

1/2 pizza dough crust recipe spread out into a thin round
3 Lupo’s sausages grilled and sliced
2 hot wax peppers seeded and sliced
6-8 tbs of pizza sauce
6 oz Fresh mozzarella cheese sliced

Both pizzas turned out quite well. The grilled one didn’t stick which was my biggest concern. The only issue it was a little dry which means it needed pesto, olive oil or more tomatoes to give it a bit more juice. In contrast the oven baked pizza was TOO juicy. The tomato sauce dripped everywhere including all over the oven. Which also made it stick to the pan. Once we got it detached using a spatula though it was super tasty.
